I love being by the coast, especially when I’m joined by an oncoming weather front or ferocious storm. Watching the weather change and the waves crash into the coast is a very meditative experience for me, a bit like staring into a space, the middle distance, where you’re mind wanders but the senses stay alive.

Traditional landscape photography is often about composing a scene filled with recognisable geographic features; and as much as I enjoy this style of photography, I feel like it discourages the viewer to have a meaningful connection with the image. Sometimes, if I can disguise the location completely and still evoke the emotions I felt whilst being there, I feel like I have achieved something more powerful than simply making it recognisable.

This particular image was made during a walk along the Dingle peninsula, Co. Kerry but could, in fact, have been anywhere in the world. Hopefully the abstract forms and textures allow you to imagine a time when you too have felt hypnotised by the sea and spent a brief exchange with nature.
